Queensland Outback Part 1

Alpha and Jericho

After an evently fossicking experience, we were up for another venture - Queensland outback! After Sapphire, we kept heading west and had a quick stop in Alpha. The town is around 168 km west of Emerald. It is known as "The Gateway to the West", and has an interesting mix of historic and modern buildings. We came around a bakery and decided to grab some sausage roll and pies. Driving around, you wont miss the murals on the building walls and fences.

55 km further west of Alpha is a rural village named Jericho and this was where we camped after a short day drive. Located along the Capricorn Highway, between Emerald and Barcaldine, Jericho's streets are named after scientists."The town is renowned for the Crystal Trumpeters, a striking sculpture constructed in memory of the Biblical Jericho, which was said to be destroyed by trumpeters marching around the city's walls."

We camped at Jericho Comunity Park. Although the site has no power, the view and serenity was more than enough. The site was surprisingly beautiful that we decided to stay there for a couple of nights.

The site has fresh water, shower, picnic area and toilet but no power.

We were surprised to learn this town has a drive-in theatre, which is believed to be the smallest in Australia. Movies are shown once a month and luckily we were able to watch a funny Jim Carey movie - Mr. Popper's Penguin.
