Kilcoy - Lake Somerset

This was at Kilcoy showgrounds.

After almost two weeks camping in Maleny, I reckon we have covered a lot of the surrounding towns and honestly, I started to get bored so we packed and headed to Kilcoy which is only around 55 kms away. We camped overnight at the town's showground and after setting up the bus, we drove to Lake Somerset to check out a camp site near the lake.

Somerset Dam was completed in 1953

"Lake Somerset is an artificial lake created by the Somerset Dam on the Stanley River in South East Queensland. The dam was completed in 1953 providing flood mitigation and water storage for the cities of Brisbane and Ipswich and is the site of a small hydroelectric power station. Dam operators discharge water into the Wivenhoe Dam downstream to hold Somerset's water at normal level.

This is the Spit.

There are two public access areas on Somerset Dam - that is Kirkleagh Recreation and Camping Area and The Spit. Camping is permitted and caravans are catered for at Kirkleagh and below the dam wall at Somerset Park in the small town of Somerset. When we got there, we saw hundreds of campers and boats and skis were everywhere at The Spit. It sure was a popular destination but we did not camp there since it was almost full but we did a quick stop and had a look at the activities going at the Spit. Check out some of the photos from the Spit below.

There are several parking spaces at the Spit entrance.

Basic amenities are provided.

Swimming, fishing and ski are permitted at the Spit.

Camping and pets are not allowed at the Spit.
